IRAN'S NUCLEAR ENRICHMENT: NOT MUCH TO GET WORKED UP ABOUT. ABC News' military analyst, Anthony Cordesman, in an 8-page paper pointed out that the announcement by Teheran that it has successfully enriched uranium fuel to 3.5% using 164 centrifuges, is not only not a big event, but it falls far short of developing even commercial enriched uranium. He said there is no clear evidence that Iran has brought the limited 164 centrifuge chain at Natanz on-line in any kind of sustained operation. Moreover, these are old P-1 type centrifuges, which take thousands operating continuously for a year to have major output for running a nuclear power plant. In order to make weapons-grade uranium (almost 90% concentration of U235 in the U238-U235 mix), it would need 10,000 such centrifuges.

Iran is a signatory of the nuclear non-proliferation treaty (NPT) which allows it to enrich uranium for commercial fuel. Such fuel would have a concentration of almost 7% of U235 in the U238-U235 mix.
